John is a native of the Tri-City area. He is a graduate of Elon University, class of 1985. After completing college he decided to pursue a Real Estate career. He received his Virginia salesman Real Estate License in 1986, he joined his family Real Estate Office, G.E. MATTHEWS INC REALTORS. In 1994, John became the Broker of G.E. MATTHEWS INC REALTORS. John is an active Rotarian and is a past President of his club.

In 2007, John served as President of the Southside Virginia Association of Realtors and was also named Realtor of the Year that same year, John has also served as Treasurer and has held a variety of chair positions. In 2014 John served as President once again of Southside Virginia Association of Realtors, and was the first to have a second term as President. John was also named Realtor of the Year twice for SVAR. In 2017 John was inducted as Central Virginia MLS President. In addition he has served on the Board of Directors of Virginia Realtors from 2017-2019. He has also served on various NAR committees.

In 2006, John opened Weichert Realtors Brockwell & Portwood, with his partner Deirdre Portwood. In 2019, John Brockwell and Deirdre Portwood went their separate ways. His company name has changed to Weichert Realtors Brockwell & Associates. John currently is the concurrent broker with Weichert Realtors Brockwell & Associates and G.E. Matthews Property Management.

John has also served as president for the Weichert Realtors Virginia Broker Council 2008-2014
