Best 4th of July Events Around Richmond, Chesterfield & the Tri-Cities (2026 Guide)

Every Independence Day, Central Virginia comes alive with fireworks, live music, hometown celebrations, and family fun. Whether you're new to the Richmond area or have lived here for years, there are plenty of ways to celebrate America's birthday.

Here are some of my favorite July 4th celebrations around Richmond and the surrounding communities.

🎆 Dogwood Dell – Richmond's Signature Celebration

For many Richmond residents, Dogwood Dell is the place to celebrate Independence Day.

Located in Byrd Park, this free event features patriotic music from the Richmond Concert Band, food vendors, and an incredible fireworks finale. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and arrive early to grab a great spot. The celebration begins around 5:00 p.m., with fireworks after dark.

⚾ Star-Spangled Squirrels Fest at CarMax Park

Looking for something a little more exciting?

The Richmond Flying Squirrels are celebrating Independence Day at CarMax Park with:

  • Live music
  • On-field access
  • Food and drinks
  • Family activities
  • One of Richmond's largest fireworks displays

It's an excellent choice for families, couples, or groups of friends looking for a festive atmosphere.

🎸 Chesterfield County Fourth of July Celebration

If you're in Chesterfield or the Tri-Cities, this free event is one of the area's biggest celebrations.

You'll enjoy:

  • Live entertainment
  • Kids Zone
  • Food trucks
  • Vendors
  • Fireworks after dark

The festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds.

🎶 Henrico's Red, White & Lights

Looking for something different?

Henrico's celebration at Meadow Farm includes:

  • Richmond Symphony performance
  • Kids activities
  • Food vendors
  • Historical displays
  • A spectacular laser light show instead of fireworks

It's a great option for families with young children or anyone sensitive to fireworks.

🎉 Don't Forget These Local Favorites

  • Ashland Independence Day Parade
  • Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden (free admission on July 4)
  • Liberty or Death reenactment at Historic St. John's Church
  • Local breweries and rooftop celebrations throughout Richmond

My Local Tip

If you're planning to attend fireworks, arrive at least an hour early. Parking fills quickly, especially at Dogwood Dell and Chesterfield Fairgrounds. Pack water, bug spray, lawn chairs, and a blanket for a more comfortable evening.
